I honestly loved the dub as a child, but watching it now… I can’t. It’s too babyish to be honest. When I first watched the Japanese version, I was SO ANGRY. I was mad at how much was left out. I felt cheated. All we got was the crappy, watered down version… It wasn’t even the same. I can’t believe these changes were even allowed. And the part that is most upsetting is people still, as adults, watch it and they still haven’t seen the sub!

The excuse I hear most is either: “I don’t want to read!” or ” I can’t read and watch at the same time!” I am blind in my left eye and I can still read AND watch at the same time. It’s not impossible, especially when someone with a visual disability can do it.

Anyway, on with the reasons…

1.) The dubbers left out a WHOLE SEASON. There is a whole season missing, for crying out loud.

2.) Six unaired episodes, not including the Sailor Stars season and the 3 Special episodes (5 episodes in the first season, 1 episode in R.) So that means there are roughly 43 episodes that were NEVER SHOWN.

3.) ONE OF MY FAVORITE EPISODES WASN’T EVEN TRANSLATED.

4.) The changing of the dialogue… (example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4, example 5) Please view them.

5.) There are three Special Episodes in Supers that were never dubbed.

6.) The three movie openings that were never in the English versions of the movies. These were so cute. Why didn’t those #$%@*% use them?! See them here: R Movie, S Movie, Supers Movie

7.) Since I’m talking about the movies… The scene where the senshi reflect on their lives before and after they met Usagi in the R movie was one of the most touching and relatable scenes out of the whole series… AND THEY RUINED IT.

8.) This is a huge reason why I don’t like the dub… the censoring of Haruka and Michiru’s relationship.

9.) Another big reason… feminine male or openly gay characters were changed to females.

10.) The word “scout” is like nails on a chalkboard… I can’t stand it. They are soldiers/guardians… NOT SCOUTS.

11.) The original names were changed. Raye and Amy don’t bother me too badly but Lita? Really?

12.) I can’t stand most of the VAs. The original VAs did it best. Everything in the dub is SO LOUD.

13.) The villains that got dubbed names… who the fuck is Bertie/Birdie? “NEGAMOON” Does everything sinister have to include “nega” in it? I don’t get why was it necessary to change the names of all the villain groups from what they were originally called.

14.) S is much more sinister in Japanese. I felt so cheated after I watched it subbed for the first time.

15.) Most violence is completely cut out.

16.) This.

17.) They changed the silliest things that did not need edited… like when Dr. Tomoe was making himself coffee… They changed it to hot chocolate.

18.) I watched the dub as a kid (though I never saw R in English) and I don’t recall ever seeing the senshi dying. I remember Neptune and Uranus dying in S but I’m pretty sure they never showed the impact.

19.) The changing of the item names.

Crystal Carillon =  Crystal/Twinkle Bell

Holy Grail = Purity Chalice

20.) The inconsistencies with the attacks. Attack names would CONSTANTLY change back and forth, along with transformation phrases. Throughout the entire S season, Sparkling Wide Pressure was usually called “Sparkling Wide Pressure”, but there were occasions that it was called “Jupiter Thunder Power” and “Supreme Thunder Crash”. Venus’s “Love-Me Chain” also got many names, fluctuating from “Venus Love Chain Encirlce”, to “Venus Love Chain Whip”, “Venus Love Chain Harness”, and sometimes just “Venus Love Chain”.

21.) The removal of “Make up!”

22.) The changing of the background music is not a choice that I agree with.

23.) There is so much missing… more than I can even type.

24.) Plot changes oh my god plot changes. I can’t remember which dubber (DIC or CWI, I’m unsure) was guilty of this but weren’t certain episodes fused together?

25.) Watch this video. It’s the average episode edit. The only statement I disagree with in that video is “The American version is for children, the Japanese version is for young adults.” The Japanese is for everybody, especially children. The culture is just different.

26.) The humor just isn’t in the dub like it is in the sub.

27.) I know it was the 90s, but did they have to go overboard with the 90s slang? Nobody ever talked like that!

28.) The terrible English version of Ai no Senshi. WHAT WAS THAT?

29.) Some things didn’t even make SENSE in English.

30.) The original score was one of the best things about it… so why did they choose to remove songs (Princess Moon, Otome no Policy) and butcher certain songs (Ai no Senshi) and yet keep some of the Japanese songs (Tuxedo Mirage)?

31.) You get to see Sailor Saturn in only a few scenes.

32.) I hate how blatantly homophobic it is. According to the dub, homosexuality and cross dressing should not be shown.

34.) Why didn’t they use the original opening footage? Instead we got stuck with the shitty ones that they made.

I know the dub was a lot of people’s childhood… but isn’t it time you see the original? I know it is nostalgic and all but learn to appreciate something you haven’t seen. Once you watch it, you will have nostalgic memories to it as well, I promise. You don’t know what you are missing. More people like the dub than they like the sub and that hurts my heart. Please give it a chance.
